As I perused through a lot of videos today on YouTube in regards to California’s Proposition 8, a new amendment to the California State Constitution that constitutes a legal form of discrimination against homosexuals, I began to realize how much I actually have a high distaste for people who are religious zealots.

In the short run, I’ve had numerous posts in regards to people who have very strong religious convictions.  I have adversity in my daily life with my boyfriend and I.  Jacob and I are two very different people from very different backgrounds.  I grew up a Roman Catholic and he grew up Southern Baptist/Charismatic Pentecostal.  The two barely combine as it is and even as that comes to light, you also have to realize that staunch Roman Catholics, such as my parents, and staunch Southern Baptists, such as Jacob’s parents, rarely have an agreement in terms of anything, however, one thing they can manage to agree upon is that homosexuality is evil and is completely irreversible as a sin.

I will not sit here and condemn anyone for their beliefs or actions, nor will I deem anyone into condemnation due to the fact that their ideas differ greatly from mine.  My issue with today’s society is that Christianity has come a long way from its former acceptance.

For instance, during Jesus’ time, Jesus accepted a lot of sinners, including Mary Magdalene, who was openly displayed as a “whore” in the Holy Bible.  Not only that, Jesus also stated that the world was coming anew and that Christians should exhibit their faith not in a way that persecutes sinners, but one that allows sinners to come closer to Christ in the exhibition of a loving, peaceful environment which a sinner would feel welcome.

Well, that is definitely not the case.  Proposition 8 is one movement that is a definite blow to Christianity in general.  The reason being is that Proposition 8 is backed by hard lined Christian Republicans that have allowed the governments of states and the federal government to be governed by religion instead of rights. As such, I have to make this point, Christianity is now a “diluted” religion.

The original texts of the Holy Bible do not exist in the form that they did when Jesus was around.  Fact: The Holy Bible’s translations from English are grossly mistranslated and changed to fit the needs of King James, the first English monarch to commission the Bible’s translation.  Leading into further discussion, when comparing different versions of the Holy Bible, in French, German, Swedish and English, there is absolutely no mention of homosexuality in any of the versions I looked at, being the Louis Ségond for French and various translations for both German and Swedish.  The English versions all had perverse thoughts toward homosexuality and in fact, came so far as actually using the terminology.

I hate to rain on anyone’s parade that keeps the Bible completely and dear to their hearts, but unless you are reading the original Ancient Hebrew and Greek versions of the Bible, you are not reading the original. You are reading a watered down version of revisionist history that has been exhumed from the depths of man’s minds, not the actual Word of God.  Then again, who am I to say that that’s wrong, right?  I only speak four languages and can read Latin transcripts without problem.  I’m no linguist.

However, let’s get back to how absurd Proposition 8 is.  I am going to equate it to the Jim Crow laws of the South.  By banning same-sex civil unions you are doing the same as the Jim Crow laws.  Let’s compare and contrast, shall we?

Jim Crow Laws (Kentucky State Code): 1952: Miscegenation

Prohibited marriage between whites and persons of color.

Proposition 8:

Proposition 8 is titled Eliminates Right of Same-Sex Couples to Marry.[1][2] It is an initiative measure on the 2008 California General Election ballot. If passed, the proposition would change the California Constitution to eliminate the right of same-sex couples to marry in California[3]. A new section would be added stating “only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.”

This is the same exact thing.  Take away “eliminates” and replace it with “prohibits” and you have the exact same law.  Jim Crow is now widely construed as a set of codes that is discriminatory and despicable. Now you have Proposition 8, which is just as discriminatory and despicable as Jim Crow.

If you are truly a Christian and a truly a believer in God, you will do the right thing and vote against Proposition 8.  It is nothing but a further division of social rights and freedoms that everyone deserves.  If you even begin to reason that the prohibition of marriage between a man and a man will protect your marriage as a heterosexual, your logic is severely flawed.  Heterosexual relationships are ten times more likely to fail than any other relationship.  Homosexual unions, already exhibited in various countries which allow them, are the longest standing and most accepted among countries such as The Netherlands and other European nations.  Your reasoning is invalid and will not be accepted as a common point of reasoning, although I can see your viewpoint, I do not and will never agree with it.

It’s all well said, hun, and I totally agree with it! About the Bible though, it’s actually impossible to read it in its original form, since the oldest manuscript found dates from about 1000AD and each copy that was made in those days, no matter how careful they were, could contain mistakes. ;)

@Jess, thanks for the comment. I do agree with you as far as the translations go. I feel that no matter what, we will never know what any religion actually was founded on. Our histories have been way too far diluted for any of this to make sense or matter at this point.

Christianity is still dear in my heart, but the fact that people base so much on these translations is really disturbing, especially since it has been proven that they are not the most accurate.
