- When Doors Shut, Find One That’s Open
“Sometimes good things happen when you least expect it, from a source you never imagined.” - F. Garofalo
Today has been rather rough for me. I’m sitting in my office, rapping lightly on the keyboard, in a dimmed room with very few lights at the “Witching Hour.” I’m exhausted. I want to curl up in bed and feel warm and safe, but alas, I cannot sleep. I keep thinking about life and how much I wish it could be something more than it isn’t.
I spoke with several friends tonight about my chaotic predicament. The most prevalent of the conversations came from one of my best friends. She observes that I’m in love with ideas, rather than reality. She encouraged me not to rush what my ideas may be because they may not be what I’m expecting. The issue is is that I’m expecting nothing.
I’ve learned long ago that expecting something greater than what I can provide for myself will not only lead to a destructive thought process, but it will also kill whatever hope I have inside. I’m not expecting anything, I’m rather hoping for the best. She’s right though. I am in love with the idea. It’s probably one of the only “constants” I do have, but it’s a refreshing constant.
I’m noticing that every door I walk through here is shutting fast. There’s a reason for that. I’m not real sure what that reason is, but I’ll find out sooner or later, I suppose. Every time one door shuts, another one opens… it’s just finding that open door is tough. It’s a journey that is sometimes scary and confusing. It goes against all plans and ideas. It makes things bizarre and uncomfortable. I once said that “whenever you are most comfortable, you aren’t being challenged at all.” Lately, I’ve been really uncomfortable, so the challenges have been far greater than ever imagined.
My friend Frank is right. Sometimes good things do happen from a source that is unexpected. I’m not sure what that source is, or what it has in store for me, but one thing is certain — it will be a good thing… whatever it happens to be.
