As you all know, I have been recently undecided in my political stance in the United States Presidential Election in 2008.  Most of you do know my Canadian stance, as I have already cast my early vote upon request from the Province of Québec. A lot of people figured that I would vote for Stephen Harper’s Conservative Party of Canada. Well, to all of your astonishment, I did not.  Harper has repeatedly opposed all forms of homosexual right in Parliament and as such, Harper has lost my vote for the October election. I know this may seem rather stereotypical for a hard lined, separatist as I am, but I voted for Gilles Duceppe of the BQ because he supports gay marriage and equal rights for all citizens of Canada.

My sentiments are also echoed with my choice for president in the United States.  I am casting my vote, officially, for Barack Obama.  A lot of people have started to question my reasoning as to why I will be doing so.  Barack has officially stated to many town hall audiences that he supports gay marriage and gay rights, and as such, I am forced, as a homosexual male to partake in the advent of these causes.  I feel that this is a great leap forward for gay rights in the United States and that it will greatly take down countless cases of discrimination and hate crimes against persons who have an alternative lifestyle, not by choice, but by right.

McCain does not support same-sex marriages and neither does his running mate, Sarah Palin, even though she has publicly stated that she has homosexual friends.  According to the Human Rights Campaign, even homosexuals in Alaska don’t call her a “friend.”  Her stances on gay marriage are loosely religiously based and again, to reference my previous basis on religious texts, I would have to say that this closely corresponds with the post I made just recently regarding California’s Proposition 8, which bans same-sex marriages per the state constitution.

Another reason to support Obama is over health issues.  I have a lot of serious health issues and risks that could potentially present problems for me in the future.  I am not like most American citizens.  At this point in time, I am double insured by United Healthcare and Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield.  Not only that, I also have insurance benefits from the government of Canada and other jurisdictions as deemed fit.  I do not have the issue of having being denied healthcare, etc., however, I know countless people who have needed medical attention and have been denied due to “pre-existing conditions.”  McCain does not even address this issue, however, in last night’s town hall debate, Obama addressed the issue of healthcare by saying that he will reduce premiums that people have to pay for healthcare and make it illegal for insurance companies to deny someone coverage because of “pre-existing conditions.” Keep in mind, the list of pre-existing conditions is extensive and can cover anything from HIV/AIDS to a bump on the knee that has caused scar tissue to form or muscle death.

That being said, the reasoning for a homosexual or someone who is in dire need of medical attention should really know who they need to vote for.  In November, cast your votes for Barack Obama.  He supports the vast majority of America and has promised our country freedoms, liberties, and (finally) justice, for those individuals who happen to be a little different than the status-quo.  For too many years, homosexuals and other citizens who do not live up to the standards of Conservative Christians have been treated as second class citizens and this has got to stop.
