I have seen that people are less likely to be themselves in an effort to make themselves “more interesting” or “more well-rounded.”  Being yourself is interesting enough.  No one today is anything but someone different than who they are. Everyone has the “Lie Bug,” or that inevitable little tick that makes people believe that they have to lie in order to bring themselves to an elevated position above someone else.

My friend and I were discussing this last night over dinner. One of our good friends, who I will not name for security reasons, has decided to take on the persona of a German. He continues to tell people that he is from Germany, was born in Germany, and is nothing but German through and through. We recently found out that he is German, in fact, but through ancestry. Why did he find it necessary to lie and create a persona that isn’t him?

Why is it necessary to tell people that you’re someone that you’re not?  I have never understood why people find it necessary to make themselves “more interesting.” Everyone already has a story to tell, no matter who they are.  Your life is just as important as anyone else’s.  So be it if you’ve lived in the United States all of your life, have participated in the same activities as everyone else and you were in the middle of your class in high school.  Don’t make something up and say that you’re from Germany, that you speak fluent German (when you don’t), say that you were in a division of the Bundesgrenzschatz, and that you worked for Das Telefonbuch. I don’t believe it anymore than the next person.

So be you. It’s who YOU are. You paint your own canvas. You are the art. Make your life your masterpiece.

It drives me crazy when people pretend to be someone they’re not. I’m perfectly content to be myself. But I do musical theatre, where I become other people on stage. Maybe that’s why I don’t feel the need to act out and be someone else 24/7.
