I awoke this morning to a few email responses to my latest blog, Violated, which encompassed my story of being sexually molested for three years by my neighbour. Usually, I receive a barrage of hate mail from my blogs and you know, the usual few comments that adequately explain their position as either characteristically religious or stereotypically homophobic. This time, I learned that I am not alone.
Twenty different e-mails from completely different people were in my personal email today that let me know that even though I had experienced something completely horrific, I was not alone. My heart goes out to all of you who emailed me your stories and who allowed me to partake in your experiences. As someone who has felt it, been through it, and has experienced it psychologically, I extend my apologies for all that has ever happened to you and hope that you are all continuing to lead productive lives sans doubt and worry.
It felt good to know that I wasn’t the only one who had experienced such a travesty in my life. I felt like I was alone when I wrote the post and I had to have a large amount of gaul to post it. I was upset and confused when I wrote it as I felt as if my past was going to come back and haunt me, but I overcame it and stuck through it to tell my story. Now, it’s up to you. You can also tell your story. Your story is extremely important and though you may not think it makes a difference, it truly does, and I am a firsthand account of the devastation that it causes for some people. Life can sometimes be cruel, but it can also be wonderful. As I once saw on a poster at work, “Keep your head toward the sunshine and you will never see the shadows.” Keep that quote in mind and nothing will tear you down. We are all strong and we are all one. You all mean the world to me and thank you for your stories.
I appreciate your concern and I appreciate your feedback. For those of you who have told me privately, through either Facebook, MSN, or AIM, I appreciate the fact that you could talk to me about it. I understand that the post greatly upset some of you and I apologize for that. I have never seen such an amazing reaction to something so hurtful in my life. You all have truly provided me with a new outlook on what has happened and I believe that I am finally getting over my personal convictions.
Life is great and we must all live it to the fullest. Remember, always, you are never alone. There are more people out there that have the same, if not similar problem. Find them, nurture them, and care for them. You will be surprised how much your life will change.
